Mille Lacs County is located in East Central Minnesota, with Mille Lacs Lake on its northern border and the city of Princeton at its southern border. The county covers 685 square miles. The population is 26,377 (US Census Bureau 2008 estimate).

Five commissioners represent the five districts, 17 townships, and eight cities within the county.

Board meetings are held at 9 a.m. on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Tuesdays of the month in the Commissioner's Room at the Courthouse.

Under Minnesota law, Minn. Stat. 471.701, Mille Lacs County is required to notify its residents of the positions and base salaries of its three highest-paid employees. As of January 1, 2010 they are
County Administrator $100,152, Family Services Director $94,390, and County Engineer $86,778.
